Scottsdale: There’s A Ton To Do

Scottsdale Public Library: Actually Very Inviting

This past weekend I had something happen to me that is kind of rare. A day off. So on my personal day I decided to wander over to the Scottsdale Public Library near Old Town Scottsdale (Officially Named: Civic Center Library). To my surprise, the library is actually pretty sweet.

I’m not 100% sure what I was expecting. Flashbacks of being 9 and having to copy encyclopedias for future school projects flooded my brain as I pulled into the parking lot. When I walked in, a breath of fresh air hit me. I was shocked. The place was clean. The scenery was beautiful. It was quiet but still pretty busy. Most of all, the atmosphere was just calm. I really enjoyed myself.

For those of you who have never been to a library, you can actually take books home FOR FREE. What I didn’t know was they have magazines, movies, books on CDs and the Scottsdale Library will soon have a Cafe and coffee shop (once renovations are done).

I highly recommend the Civic Center Library if you’re looking for something to do in Scottsdale. Take an hour, browse their selection, and even consider bringing the kids. They do have to be quiet after all.

Monday – Thursday: 9 am to 9 pm
Friday & Saturday: 10 am to 6 pm
Sunday: 1 pm to 5 pm

Coyotes In Scottsdale: BEWARE

It’s no secret that not too long ago, Phoenix was just a desert. Today, that can become solidified as a reality when you run into some WILD life running around Scottsdale. That’s right. There have plenty of coyote sightings in the Scottsdale area. I’m not just talking about one coyote but packs of them running around Scottsdale. So, be careful.

Here are some tips to protect your home and pets:

If you see Coyotes running around your neighborhood, it might be a good idea to keep your small dog inside and watch them when they go out.
Large dogs usually can protect themselves. Unfortunately, packs of coyotes can gang up and surround larger animals.
You will usually tend to see Coyotes more in the winter.
They like your trash!
Coyotes are scared of people unless you get them into a corner.

Oktoberfest In Arizona

One of the nicest things about Scottsdale and even Phoenix is the close proximity to everything that is going on in the city/state. South Scottsdale, my current stomping grounds, is extremely close to the ASU and Tempe areas.

This past weekend I had the pleasure of attending Tempe’s Oktoberfest. For those of you who are un-aware of what Oktoberfest is, it is basically an event where you drink beer and eat bratwursts. Looking back, I really should have spent more time there than the few hours I had.

This was a great little event and the entry was free. From what I understood, the day time is very family oriented and the night time more of the adult fun comes out. Don’t worry guys, there was beer even during the day. On top of the beer, there was great food, music, rides, and more.

The whole thing was really all encompassing. I recommend attending next year for those who can make it.

Is there anything to do in Scottsdale?

Yes. There is plenty to do in Scottsdale for the individuals who are willing to do a little exploring. Scottsdale is actually a very large city with a lot of opportunities. When someone says Scottsdale, what is the first thought that comes to mind? I bet it is high end retail and fancy restaurants.

Both of these tend to be true, there is no denying that. Fortunately, for those who are willing to step outside of the box every once and while, you can really find some great deals. Now, before we start, I have to admit something. I was born and raised in Arizona, specifically Scottsdale. I will be the first to tell you, while I do know a lot about the city, I don’t know everything.

Here are two Old Town Scottsdale spots I recommend you try out:

Stingray Sushi ~ 6th Ave. & Scottsdale Road
They have happy hour from 4:00PM to 7:00PM Monday – Friday. The food is great and I have walked out of this place with a bill under $20 on more than one occasion.

Grand Lux Cafe ~ Fashion Square Mall
Their happy hour is also between 4 & 7. Don’t forget to sit at the bar so you can get half off appetizers and discounted drinks.

Scottsdale’s Waste Management Open

Its that time of year again in Scottsdale. The smell of good weather and golf is in the air. If you have lived in Scottsdale or Arizona for any amount of time you know that I am talking about the Phoenix Open.

The event will be held from January 31st to February 6th and everyone in Arizona shows up to have a good time. Ticket prices range from $25 a person to several hundred depending on where you want to sit. Friday and Saturday are the biggest days. The Bird’s Nest, which is essentially a giant party held after the event on Friday, is a ton of fun.

So… what are you doing this weekend in Scottsdale? You are stopping by Scottsdale’s very own Waste Management Open! Guaranteed to have a good time even if your not the biggest fan of golf.

In an attempt to keep everyone in the loop of fun, local, Scottsdale time killers, I wanted to write about Stand Up, Scottsdale! This is a local to Scottsdale, very well run, place to see some very funny comedians. Hesitant at first but motivated to go because I had a friend who was performing, I walked into the Clarion.

After everything was said and done, I was very pleased with my night and here’s why.
